12V to 1 - 8 Volt, 100mA SCR DC to DC Converter Circuit using S6008 SCR

Electronic Kit School. - This is electronic circuit of 12V to 1 - 8 Volt, 100mA SCR DC to DC Converter using S6008 SCR that we get from evaluation circuit of SCR (Reverse Blocking Thyristors) DC to DC Converter as switching devices for this DC to DC converter.

Description

Circuit like in Figure 1 above show you about the 12V to 1 - 8 Volt, 100mA SCR DC to DC Converter Circuit using S6008 SCR. The main component used in this circuit is SCR served as the DC to DC Converter.

How it works

According Electroschematics site describe that A two phase clock (gate pulses) is generated by a function generator that outputs a square wave. The limited V*uS product of the pulse transformer (and effect of C4) tend to differentiate the square wave signal thus generating 10us trigger pulses. One SCR is triggered on the positive edge while the other is triggered on the negative edge.

When SCR1 fires, C2 charges via L1 and rings up to approximately twice the input voltage (24V). At that point, the series resonant circuit attempts to ring back, but is limited by the blocking effect of SCR1 –at this point, SCR1 commutates. Upon the subsequent edge, SCR2 is triggered and discharges C2 into C3 via L1. Since C3 is much larger than C2, the charge contribution of C2 is relatively minor, causing the output voltage to increase only a fraction of a volt. When C2 is discharged to below zero, D3 clamps the voltage to -0.5V and the current through L1 continues to flow until it decays to zero. At this point, SCR2 becomes reverse biased and commutates. Then the process begins again –and runs at several kHZ. This frequency may be controlled either manually (this discussion) or automatically regulated (future discussions).

High Voltage Switching Regulator Circuit using LM5008 IC

Circuit like in Figure 1 above show you about the High Voltage Switching Regulator Circuit using LM5008 IC that can produce 24V voltage output from 26V to 90V voltage in input. The main component used in this circuit is LM5008 IC is served as step-down switching regulator.

The LM5008 is available in only SMD (Surface Mount Device) or SMT (Surface Mount Technology). It is further complicated in that the VSSOP package has a 0.025” lead pitch. As a result, this is in no way suited for breadboard testing –the best thing to do is to ‘bite the bullet’ and design a circuit board. You may also prefer to use 0805 size resistors and capacitors to make hand assembly easier –0603 is difficult, and the 0402 size is simply an electronic dust particle.

How it works

According Electroschematics site describe that to provide heat sinking to the tiny IC, I put copper blocks on all 4 corner leads –you will see how I did it when you poke around the expresspcb file. At the time, I had to create the IC footprint symbol –now expresspcb supports this device –both are present on the layout.

Scaling the voltage

I scaled the feedback for 24V output –you may desire a different voltage –output voltage = 2.5V * the ratio of R1:R1 + R2. Output capacitor voltage may be selected accordingly.

Electrolytic capacitors

Low ESR (Effective Series Resistance) capacitors required for both input and output –the input capacitor takes the worst beating to the low duty cycle rectangular discharge waveform –I do not recommend GP (General Purpose) capacitors.

Frequency

The schematic indicates 500kHZ. I do not know where this figure came from –all I know is that the frequency is relatively high. The switching regulator uses the constant off-time topology –off-time is 300nS –this makes the max frequency approach 3mHZ –frequency is variable, depending input voltage.

Free wheeling diode

The free-wheeling or back diode (D1) is an ultra-high speed 1A, 150V rectifier –the voltage rating of schottky rectifiers is too low for this application.

Input protection

To prevent catastrophic failure from accidents or IC failure, I used a Raychem PTC resettable fuse –the one selected has a 240V interrupting rating.

Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) DC to DC Boost Converter Circuit using A7530 from AiT Semiconductor Inc

Electronic Kit School. - There are many DC to DC step-up (boost) converter sold for us which can provide stable voltage and current output. Like when we want to get this device that can boost 1.5V from cell battery to 5V output, we can only buy it from online store like from Amazon or ebuy.

But in here, we will not give guidance on how to buy this converter from online store, but in here we will give you one circuit of Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) DC to DC Boost Converter Circuit using A7530 from AiT Semiconductor Inc like Figure 1 below. This circuit is surgery from the module that offered this time.

The main component used in this circuit is A7530 is served as the PFM step-up DC-DC converter. The converter can start up by supply voltage as low as 0.8V, and capable of delivering maximum 200mA output current at 3.3V output with 1.8V input Voltage. Quiescent current drawn from power source is as low as 20uA. All of these features make A7530 series be suitable for the portable devices, which are supplied by a single battery to four-cell batteries. 

How it works

Working of this minuscule DC-DC Boost converter module also like circuit in Figure 1 above is based on PFM (pulse frequency modulation) technique. According Electroschematics site describe that Pulse-Frequency Modulation (PFM) is a modulation method for representing an analog signal using only two levels (1 and 0). It is analogous to Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM), in which the magnitude of an analog signal is encoded in the duty cycle of a square wave. Unlike PWM, in which the width of square pulses is varied at constant frequency, PFM is accomplished using fixed-duration pulses and varying the repetition rate thereof.

A PFM converter is an alternative DC/DC power-converter architecture that uses a variable frequency clock to drive the power switches and transfer energy from the input to the output. Because the drive signal’s frequency is directly controlled to regulate the output voltage, this architecture is referred to as pulse-frequency modulation (PFM). DC/DC converters with constant-on-time or constant-off-time control are typical examples of the PFM architecture.

Simple USB Car Charger Circuit using LM2596 IC

With this LM2596 IC, you can create a usb power outlet that has more efficiency which can cope with higher current requirements, so that it also becomes suitable for more powerful standard usb devices and non-standard usb decorations.

Description

Circuit like in Figure 1 above show you about the Simple USB Car Charger Circuit using LM2596 IC. According Electroschematics site describe that according to the USB Battery Charging Specification, a device plugged into a USB port to charge may find itself connected to a source that is capable of data transfer as well as power, or it may be connected to a source that provides power only. If the source supports data, the device is expected to do a trickle charge only, but if the source does not support data, the device may draw more current because the source is likely to be an ac adapter. 

How it works

The DC voltage delivered by the car battery is routed to the input of the circuit through the indash cigar lighter power socket in a car. The fuse (FU1) and diode (D4) are wrong polarity/overcurrent circuit protection components and the capacitor (C3) is a smoothing element. When on/off switch (SW1) is turned to its on position, this input supply is extended to the rest of the circuit, and the power input indicator (RED LED) lights up.

The switching regulator (buck converter) circuit is built around the LM2596 IC,and is mostly based on the design given in the device’s datasheet. The LM2596 IC series of regulators are precision monolithic integrated circuits that provide all the active functions for a step-down (buck) switching regulator, capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation. These regulators operates at a switching frequency of 150 kHz thus allowing smaller sized filter components than what would be needed with lower frequency switching regulators.

Here, the 5V fixed output version LM2596 is used as the switching regulator. Note that the output available is highly dependent on the quality of inductor (L1) and output capacitor (C1). For the inductor, the dc current and resistance ratings are critical in addition to its inductance. For the capacitor, a low ESR is essential. The green LED is the power output indicator. Stable 5V dc output from LM2596 is branched into two usb outputs, named DP (Decoration Port) and DCP (Dedicated Charging Port). DP port can be used to run non-standard usb gizmos like usb reading lamp, heater, fridge, etc. 

SCR DC to DC Converter 12V to 5V USB Circuit

Electronic Kit School. - SCRs are electronic component which are served as the switching devices for the unusual DC to DC converter that is suited for the everpresent 5V USB power source and also other applications.

This novel power circuit topology uses an intermediate resonant link that facilitates self-commutation for both SCRs – while SCRs are easy to turn on, they tend to be difficult to turn off in DC applications. In this article we will show you one electronic circuit that will give you SCR DC to DC Converter 12V to 5V USB Circuit like in Figure 1 below.

Description

Circuit like in Figure 1 above show you about the SCR DC to DC Converter 12V to 5V USB Circuit. According Electroschematics site describe that this circuit has some specification for us as follow.

  1. Output voltage: 5V (may be trimmed by varying R17)
  2. Voltage regulation: Approx 1% no load to full load
  3. Response to load voltage changes: Immediate
  4. Output current: 500mA
  5. Efficiency @ FL: 55% (higher at 14V input voltage)
  6. Short circuit current: 1.3A (may be continuous without damage)
  7. Current limit: Not measured, but exceeds 1.3A

How it works

For firing SCR1, the minimum delay time is a function of the charging of C10 –this delay is extended by the effect of the voltage regulator. IC3 is the TI TL431 adjustable shunt voltage reference that is strapped for minimum (2.5V). Q7 compares this reference voltage to the feedback voltage through the feedback voltage divider that consists of R16 & 17. Q6 both inverts the feedback signal and references it to common potential so that it may shunt C10. Q5 turns on when there is voltage across the capacitor network –it essentially tells the firing circuit that the capacitor network is empty and needs a new charge. Q5 & 6 also form an AND function so that both conditions must be satisfied before C10 is allowed to charge. When C10 charges to approx 8.6V,Q10 fires and triggers SCR1. SCR1 subsequently charges the capacitor network and does not stop at 12V because at that point the inductor is fully charged and must keep conducting until the capacitor network voltage reaches approx 24V.

When the voltage across the power supply output reaches 1.2V, Q6 turns on and shunts the gate of Q9 thus turning off the startup timing capacitor. Q6 also turns on under short circuit conditions thus limiting short circuit current.


For firing SCR2, Q4 is the firing circuit. When the voltage across the capacitor network exceeds 12V, Q1 turns on, Q2 turns on and C8 is allowed to charge –at this point, the 70uS timing period commences. Actually, SCR1 does not block until L1 is fully discharged, but it will happen after another quarter-cycle of the resonant tank elapses (16uS). This allows another 54uS to elapse before SCR2 can fire and that satisfies the turn-off time spec for SCR1 (Tq).

This is simple circuit that arrange from only 4 parts, 2 capacitors, one coil inductor and the main part the LTC3525L IC from Linear Technology. The LTC3525L IC is a high efficiency synchronous step-up DC to DC converter that can start up with an input as low a 0.7V and generates a fixed 3V in output voltage. The nominal output current is around 65 mA therefore you must keep this in consideration if you want to power up devices that require higher currents. We may use a switch between pin 1 and 3 if you want to turn ON or OFF this circuit above.


5 Levels 36V Battery Indicator Circuit using LM339 IC

As the major component, LM339 will result the voltage depending the comparison of two voltage given in pin input of this IC. We can adjust the voltage in input this IC using resistor variation.

Description

Circuit like in Figure 1 above show you about the 5 Levels 36V Battery Indicator Circuit using LM339 IC. From this circuit you can produce 5 levels LED indicator depending the voltage level in battery.

According Electroschematics sites that also published this circuit show us that this battery level indicator offers (5) LEDs that light up progressively as the battery voltage increases. This is a update of the 24V Battery Level Indicator. While designed for 36V systems, it is easily modified to 24V, 48V or 60V simply by changing two resistors. D2 will ON, if the power connected that indicate 0% level, D3 will ON, if the voltage greater than 35V that indicate 25% level, D4 will ON, if the voltage greater than 37V that indicate 50% level, D5 will ON, if the voltage greater than 39V that indicate 75% level and D6 will ON, if the voltage greater than 41V that indicate 100% level.

How it is Work?

D9 and D8 is the voltage reference zener. Tied to this is a string of divider resistors (R10-13) that set the various fixed voltage levels. R6 & 7 form a voltage divider to that divides the battery voltage by a factor of 9. The quad comparator compares the various voltages from the two dividers.

For calibration, connect to a voltage source that can be set to the highest LED threshold (41V in this case). Then adjust the calibration pot until D6 flickers. The remaining LEDs will switch on close to the indicated voltage –accuracy of those voltages may suffer slightly, but should be close.


The LEDs are biased to operate at 2.3mA which is reasonably bright for high efficiency LEDs. This current can be adjusted simply by varying the emitter driver resistors (R1 through R5). To reduce standby power, a push-to-test pushbutton may be used.

0.9V/1.7V Single Cell to 3.3V/100mA Boost Converter Circuit using LTC3400 IC

In the market rechargeable battery like alkaline usually sell with voltage 1.2V or 1.5V a cell. So, in here we need boost converter to boost 1.2V or 1.5V cell battery to 3.3V for this work.

In this article we will show you one electronic circuit that will give you booster converter that can convert step-up voltage from 0.9V/1.7V in single cell to 3.3V/100mA output like in Figure 1 below.

The LTC3400 IC produced by Linear Technology and the circuit schematic also given to us as the reference to produce this DC to DC boost converter. The formula below used to determine the output voltage can be adjusted to 3.3V with maximum current are 100mA from single cell:

VOUT = 1.23V * [1 + (R1/R2)]

In here, we need to connect the SHDN pin to Vin through a 1MΩ pull-up resistor. As you can see is pretty simple to have a 3.3-Volt power source that cost around $2 if you use with the LTC3400 IC.
